LETTER OF INVITATION FOR COLGATE SPONSORSHIP OF FUND RAISING MARATHON 5K/10K EVENTS FOR DENTAL PUBLIC HEALTH

Dear

Many big businesses and multinational organizations in Jamaica are incorporating 5k/10k (Run/Walk) events into their promotions and outreach campaigns. These events are being successfully used by the entities as fund raisers to assist with funding their various charities and simultaneously establish and maintain an aggressive presence in the market place. As an organization and one of the most recognizable BRANDS in Jamaica, Colgate's record and reputation as a good, responsible and charitable corporate citizen is unquestionable. The credibility and trust that the BRAND COLGATE has developed with the Jamaican people over the years, has placed Colgate in a favourable position to capitalize in a meaningful way on the fund raising and advertising opportunities of the 5K/10K Run/Walk events in the Jamaican landscape.

Dental Public Health promotion in Jamaica is always in need of assistance for the clinical aspect and the public education. Recently, I received a preliminary copy of a proposal from an emerging local website jamaicavibez.com and among what was proposed is the staging of an annual 5K/10K Run/Walk series of events across Jamaica to raise funds to help finance the promotion of Dental Public Health. The proposal also aptly suggested COLGATE as the perfect title sponsor of these events and the related community outreach activities.

From my vantage point, it is a win win situation that would be mutually beneficial to all concerned. The reintroduction of the MOBILE DENTAL UNIT to the outreach programme will not only guarantee increased benefits but a higher operational cost as well, therefore, the necessity of a successful fun raiser to offset those costs cannot be over emphasized.

The undeniable fact that insufficient financial resources have undermined our best efforts in the past, also highlights the need for a sustainable source of funding going forward.

From all indications, the propsed events are the best fun raising options available. The long standing good relationship between Colgate and the Oral Health Unit, along with their proven track record in charitable community service in Oral Health Promotion should ensure the level of support to guarantee success.

As a Dental Surgeon and a Dental Public Health specialist with the responsibility of finding solutions to enhance the Dental Public Health programme in Jamaica, I am inquiring if Colgate would consider

incorporating these fund raising and outreach events in its promotional campaign to benefit  the Dental Public Health outreach programme.

I am in a position to assemble and lead a competent team to coordinate and organize these events and outreach activties.

If the answer to my inquiry is in the affirmative, a comprehensive proposal with all the requirements and variables; routes, permits, options for co-sponsorship, endorsements, equipment, cost etc. shall be forwarded to you.

Thanks in anticipation of your positive response.

Doctors and the protection of children

Recently Jamaicans from all walks of life have been weighing on the plight and abuse of our children The Government even enacted new legislation with stiff penalties  to counter such abuse and punish perpetrators. All mistreatment of children are highlighted in these public debates and gave their opinions and range of punishments that should be meted out to offenders. The Government in its new legislation has targeted a wide range of persons to hold accountable for the abuse of our children. Parents, neighbors caregivers person with reasons to suspect that child abuse is taking place and more, What is missing from the fore front of the new legislation is whether or not Doctors and other health care official should be held criminally responsible for failing to report to the police all cases where they detect evidence of sexual activities in their patients who are under the age of consent. If these evidence of sexual activities are as a result of sexual engagement with adults it is statutory rape. In the same way that parents and others are being held criminally responsible for their failure to act in a manner that will protect our children or report abuse,  It should be mandated and backed up by legislation that all health officials should report evidence of sexual activities in under age children that may expose statutory rape. Pregnancies, bruises, abrasions and any other traumas that points to under age children involving in sexual activities should be reported.
